HelloThere62

time for a covert ops mission to the heart of possum land, suit up.

nanomolar

Careful; Australasians don't have a great track record when it comes to declaring war on bothersome animals.

7000RPM

Everyone’s a gangster until the Emus show up

The_Hoopla

You know what’s crazy about the “30-50 feral hogs” meme? We all thought it was so ridiculous that someone made the argument that hog invasions were an actual threat, and then like a month later some lady in suburbian Houston got eaten by 10 feral hogs in her drive way.

Zebulon_Flex

["Only the fifth wild hog attack since 1825."](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/26/us/texas-woman-killed-feral-hogs.html) Still kinda sounds ridiculous but I dunno.

The_Hoopla

Yeah no it’s still a horrible argument. The *timing* is what was wild to me.

Fullsend_ID10T

They almost got Shakira too

VapeThisBro

[I mean here is a video of like 30-50 feral hogs running through a neighborhood](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sS-CMllmEec)

elveergalargaa93

What's the problem with the possums?

pangeapedestrian

NZ has these invasive possums that the Europeans brought over for *reasons*. They are everywhere. Like .... Fucking everywhere. This is a special problem in NZ, because it's an island microcosm with many unique and endangered birds and shit. Possums are kinda like cats in being very effective predators, they love eating eggs, you get the picture. So possum bad. Possum slaughter is a socially acceptable competitive sport in NZ as a result. People will go kill them for sport en masse. Totally common to see people with small crossbows while out hiking, or to see someone veer into the other lane to squish a possum they saw on the side of the road. Literally everyone in the country has it out for these little bastards. There are roadside businesses selling possum fur everything. There are massive government programs to trap and poison them as well. And none of it is ever enough. The possums abound. They are also pretty cute. And that, is the problem with the possums.

justan0therusername1

Sounds like hogs in Texas

Stock-Ad-8258

Exactly like hogs, they just breed faster and are less likely to try to run you over.

birdrossm2000

The reason question is how many possums would it take to run someone over

D8400

Jokes man jokes

wojtekthesoldierbear

No no, its not a joke. Possums are not opossums and they are invasive little assholes

Royceman01

it’s an important point about possums not being opossums. Very important.

elveergalargaa93

ah, sorry, I'm an ignorant both in guns and NZ feral animals

wojtekthesoldierbear

Possums are no joke. I would fly to NZ just to hunt them and have a soft jacket made for my wife.

lancypancy

The fur is excellent. I have some socks made from merino wool and possum fur and they are simply excellent. Like walking on a cloud and they never get sweaty or smelly.

Wheresthepig

Bout 30-50

satanyourdarklord

It’s just the one possum actually

Occams_Razor42

I dunno this looks like a good close range varmint gun. I'm pretty sure .410 slugs hit close enough to .45 LC, plus you can use buck and birdshot if needed But yes, shotgun also make quiet pew in the night lol 🙃

themadarmorer

Buckshot through an integral suppressor? Wouldn't that mess things up?

ButtWieghtThiersMoor

I would think it would be OK because of the wad. Quick google search seems most ISB shotguns can shoot buckshot/birdshot. Edit: would be sweet with waxers

themadarmorer

Nice!

jurgo

Depends on how the system is inside the suppressor. If its a continuous barrel with holes cut out you’re perfectly fine, the shot will stay inside its follower until it exits the barrel. If the barrel ends and the suppressor starts with different chambers and baffles then you’re in trouble. The shot will exit its follower pouch (im having a brain fart and have zero idea what its actual name is.) after an inch outside the barrel.

Senior_Mittens

This gun would be used on the regular for varmint control on my ranch.

s0v3r1gn

A .410/.45 is basically the perfect survival rifle in my opinion.

DirtieHarry

There's a website that makes rifled inserts for break action shotguns to shoot other calibers too. (Like .22) Having one of those too makes your .410 a hell of a survival rifle.

SHTF124

I wonder how accurate they could be? A .22 down a much larger smooth bore barrel seems like it would squirrelier than a squirrelly squirrel

darkshape

My buddy had one that was a collapsible survival rifle. Over under double barrel .410/.22 I believe it was designed to be used by downed pilots . Pretty neat little piece of kit.

jackinsomniac

Fun facts: cosmonauts going up into space in the Soyuz capsule were given a special gun in case they landed way off course, like in the Siberian wilderness, and had to wait a few days for rescue crews to reach them while fending off bears and wolves. [The TP-82](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TP-82_Cosmonaut_survival_pistol) is a triple-barreled pistol. The two upper shotgun barrels were 12.5x70mm (40 gauge), with the lower rifled barrel in 5.45x39mm.

rimpy13

> with the lower rifled barrel in 5.45x39mm. Ah, so a double-barreled shotgun with a reloadable flash bang? Or is 5.45 better out of a pistol-length barrel than I'm thinking?

babboa

It's possibly better than you think, though in all fairness "pistol length" barrel appears to have been 30cm (almost 12") on these. Pretty sure the aks-74u/krinkovs have 8.5" barrels and they are technically lethal well beyond 100 yards (I'm pretty sure they even have iron sight adjustments out to 4-500 yards). With the proper barrel twist, it is probably good enough to pick off a deer or rabbit in a survival situation.

rimpy13

Wow, damn. From the photo I expected something in 6" territory. Thanks for the info!

babboa

Sure thing, I had to look most of it up but I knew those krink barrels were super short, so we both learned something.

Knogood

Is the barrel easily swapped? Rifled for slug, smooth for shot.

WaitedTill2015ToJoin

We do too.

jsnsnnskzjzjsnns

That thing is made for poaching lol

WIlf_Brim

I get the no shotgun, but why no .22? So they would be OK with you disintigrating a rabbit with a .338 Lapua but not using a .22?

Why spend time field dressing a kill when you can just separate it's parts in one go! ...granted you'll spend some time looking for all the parts....

MoistenMeUp7

Thats why my deer gun is an M2 browning.

.32 target pistol with stock and scope and using wadcutters would be a sweet rabbit gun...

Hankiehanks

What about 17hmr?

mtdewrulz

I was thinking the same thing. Or an air rifle.

NH_H3C-N-CH3

Do you guys not have smaller non firearms like pellet or BB guns?

DStroyour

Perfect strategy, ban the guns used by people breaking already existing laws.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

could they get around it by using .17hmr or using a shotgun with the pistol caliber adapters? or those old 9mm flobert garden guns?

Vampircorn

Viktor_Korobov

Common poacher guns are shotguns and 22s.

JudgeWhoAllowsStuff

Also very common as regular hunting guns.

Viktor_Korobov

Exactly. Thus the ban

TomTheGeek

100% of murders drink water. Water is now banned.

Viktor_Korobov

Y'all missed my point. Banning the most common guns (and coincidentally the cheapest) removes most people from the equation.

DStroyour

Perfect strategy, ban the guns used by people breaking already existing laws.

kiakosan

That just seems like a bad idea though, instead of shooting a bird with a shotgun or even a .22, you have to use a larger caliber round which could end up over penetrating and going Lord knows where since birds usually perch on branches above people

Tbrous4

r/AccidentalAA

AwkwardDrummer7629

That’s why I hunt birds with a Flak Vierling.

wojtekthesoldierbear

You have protected species in NZ? Wow. Didn't know that.

markwalter7191

They have unbelievably endangered species, like the flightless bird, and Lazarus taxon, takahē. It was actually believed extinct for 50 years until it a small population was rediscovered. There are only 500 living today. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Island_takah%C4%93 Humans have already caused the extinction of an almost unbelievable number of bird species since reaching New Zealand. Including all nine species of the large Moa bird. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_New_Zealand_animals_extinct_in_the_Holocene The Maori killed off all the big ones (pretty typical pattern throughout most of the world once humans reach an area, suddenly the megafauna goes extinct) basically and the Europeans did their best to get rid of the rest essentially.

wojtekthesoldierbear

Interesting. Dont know why I got downvoted, but alright.

noodlefrits

Reddit hive mind doing hive mind things.

moratnz

Pretty much all our native birds, and a bunch of our native reptiles got roundly fucked by the introduction of rats by Māori, and possums and tuberats by Europeans.

kpin

So just like everywhere else... pieces of shit trying to end even more endangered species.

KakkaKarrot

Tbf this is a bit different. These are the native people continuing with their way of life. The whole of industrialized humanity causing climate change has altered the environment to the point where these people's way of life is not sustainable due to no fault of their own So yes they definitely 100% should not be able to hunt endangered species, but I see where they may be frustrated

[deleted]

mosullini

It's not like anything's ever been hunted to extinction either.

Life-Inspector

New Zealand is a fully industrialized, first-world country. “Continuing…their way of life” is never a valid excuse. There are a ton of cultural practices around the world that need to be judiciously eradicated.

KakkaKarrot

>“Continuing…their way of life” is never a valid excuse. There are a ton of cultural practices around the world that need to be judiciously eradicated "they definitely 100% should not be able to hunt endangered species, but I see where they may be frustrated"

Life-Inspector

Which means it’s not a valid reason. Just because your ancestors did it does not make it morally correct.

KakkaKarrot

> they definitely 100% should not be able to hunt endangered species Im agreeing with you

WalkerSunset

I think it's the way you said it. Kind of like saying, "we definitely 100% shouldn't own slaves, but I see where you might be frustrated" would get you some downvotes.

BigBlackThu

That's 100% for taking small game at night, lol

wojtekthesoldierbear

Its made for fun hunting.

wojtekthesoldierbear

You shut your mouth. Suppressed 410 shotguns FTW. Silent crow snuffer? Pleasant pigeon popper? Raucous rat raper? All in a day's fun.

PLOGER522

Hmm... Sniper TF2?

bushboy94

Use them around urban areas for rabbits and geese I'm building one now for urban pest control

SakanaToDoubutsu

I was going to say this is British, but New Zealand is part of the commonwealth so close enough. I can see these being useful for blasting pests without spooking all your sheep...

LabattRED

I've got the Yildiz already. Now I need to figure out how to port the barrel and Form 1 the shroud.

CakeIsaVegetable

New Zealand? Have you guys got your hands on the Lithgow arms atrax f90 yet? I've been wanting that thing to come to market forever but it doesn't look like it will anytime soon after Christchurch.

ElectricBullet

What law changes? American here

Roll9ers

> There is basically no practical use for them i'd use it for snakes, coyotes and raccoons.

x8d

Because tax stamps are in the US, and the guns are in NZ?

Hansj3

Okay. I guess I was confused if maybe an integral barrel on a shotgun somehow bypassed something.

BillMahersPorkCigar

I wish!

next_redsteppa

Damn. Guns are cheap. Would have thought something like that costs much more.

Lemonova

If you think that's cheap, you should see how much old side by side shotguns sell for in the UK.

next_redsteppa

What do they sell for? Can you just buy those in the unUK? I wouldn't have thought.

Lemonova

£10 ish. Need a shotgun certificate which is trivial to obtain.

AwkwardDrummer7629

How can I get one from the UK to Alaska?

Lemonova

Probably have to go through a firearms dealer to import it. Not sure whether it would be financially viable.

next_redsteppa

Oh really? And I thought they'd be relatively strict there. Interesting.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

my first question is if these double barrels will explode upon firing if they are old secondly are they cheap because there is a limit on how many they can own?

Lemonova

They're just cheap because nobody wants them. There is no limit on how many one can own.

mwmwmwmwmmdw

fuck me i saw 9 shotguns on guntrader for $120usd. i would be tempted to stockpile them just in case. do places ever do gun buybacks over there for profit opportunities off these?

Ltlshabazz

The Yildiz single shot .410 is $129 at Academy. $800+ seems a bit pricey, even with the scope and suppressor.

next_redsteppa

>$129 Wow.

88E30

It's in NZ.

__T0MMY__

Don't know why you were down voted, I live in a red state in the US and a side-by-side without engravings will run at least this much

next_redsteppa

Oh, I have no clue about gun prices at all. We can't have 'em here this easily. I just was quite impressed of how cheap such a model goes for. I payed more for my recurve bow. Without thermal sight and silencer...

Arbiter329

Keep in mind the thermal sight is not included.

next_redsteppa

Ah, allright. I thought so.

Arbiter329

Yeah, those things go for thousands of dollars.

rocketboy2319

For me: 1) I'm getting this! 2) What should I do with it?

fukitol-

That's basically every new firearm i get. I'm putting together the bits for a 1000yd 6.5 Creedmoor. Why? Fuck if i know, but I wanna make the metal go ding from way over there

Just-a-guess

I just put together a 1000yd 6.5PRC. Savage 110 Ultralight with a Vortex Viper 6-24x50! How is yours going?

fukitol-

Ruger American Predator with Athlon Argos BTR (6-24x50), Vortex rings. Still shopping for a chassis, and looking at maybe swapping the optic for the next generation Argos which has a 0-stop.
