Anyone else you vacuum sealing for long term storage?

Anyone else you vacuum sealing for long term storage?

FroggyNight

What is this “long term storage” you speak of? Lol. I usually burn through my harvest rather quickly. I give it to friends and family as well as make butter.

LeisurelySerious

I did that and still have 5 ounces left over

FroggyNight

Well dang. 5oz? You realize this is microgrowery ya? Lol. I tease, I tease. But yeah I say vacuum sealed and either a cool dark place or even fridge/freezer would be a great bet. You make some hash or rosin too? I think that’s what ima try on my next grow.

LeisurelySerious

I was thinking about rosin but I’d have to buy the heat press and I haven’t done that yet

FroggyNight

Well you could do bubble hash rather inexpensively with some mesh bags and a bucket of ice water. But ya the press can be an investment. Luckily they seem to have gone down in price over the years. I mean if you wanna be super ghetto I’ve seen people pull it off (to varying degrees of success) with a hair straightener.

LeisurelySerious

I used to do bubble hash but it was to annoying having to stir and stir and stir so now I just make Tincture. It takes an extra month but then you have a thc liquid you can drink rub on your hands cook with and just put under your tongue

MedicalMaryJane1917

I felt the same way: hash is more work and waste than it’s worth (to me). As for tincture, I’m tincture-crazy I’ve spent far too much time making, researching and experimenting with it. Just here to let you know the month is entirely unnecessary. If you decarboxylate the cannabis and use the QWET (cold) method in your freezer it’s done within an hour and will likely test better than any that undergo long macerations. Those long soaks are actually intended for non-resinous herbs like ashwagandha, valerian, hops, chamomile, so on. Non-resinous plants hide their active ingredients inside, so you have to let alcohol slowly break them down and leach it out. Resinous plants like cannabis keep almost all the active ingredients on the surface. All you need is a solvent like everclear and cold temperatures to knock them off within ~5 minutes or so. Keep in mind you can also make FECO from your tincture and use that in a variety of edibles/baking.

Mudcrutched

I make bubble hash with dry ice and its surprisingly fast and not too much work

LarYungmann

I just picked up some commercial bubble hash (Illinois) ... reminds me much of Blond-Lebanese... Love it - Burns nice and slow and does not have a waxy aftertaste.

RagsAberdeen

That's how I did my first. I didn't know people actually did it in water. Made me question everything I had been doing up until then or if I was even doing it right. If you dry and cure properly, some would be amazed at the yield/work ratio.

Novacane64

Try one of the washing machines for bubble. Game changer. You can buy the "Bubble Man" one for $250, or the EXACT SAME thing unbranded on amazon for $60.

Rndmdvlpr

Got a link for future reference? Feel free to DM if links are against rules.

bluemorpho808

Use a a long paint mixer with a cordless drill. Bam. Makes the bubble hash process way more enjoyable.

RealJeil420

why would you rub it on your hands? For joint pain?

LeisurelySerious

Ya it helps with that

FarleysFather

What's your go to recipe? I want to make salve with my SLH outdoor and I'm contemplating raw shake/fluff with some decarbed bud mixed in

iamkylo214

Lotta people dont realize you can get a decent vacuum and pressure pot for about the same as a decent entry level press. It's easier than ever to purge your own concentrates. Just dont ever blast indoors and your golden.

FroggyNight

Orly now? Ima have to go look that up because I’m getting back into epoxy resin pouring and will need a pressure pot anyways.

iamkylo214

Bestvaluevacs. Think I spent about 600 all together. I went for the upgraded digital heat pad tho. It was an investment but it was back when all I could find was unpurged garbage for 60-70 a gram. I had to do somthing.

FroggyNight

Eww that’s disgusting. I’m super lucky to live where I do and I can get good good concentrates for $25-30 a gram and some stupid stuff for even more. Very few are in that $60 price range here but if they are, they’re most definitely worth it.

iamkylo214

Yeah times have changed. These days I couldn't even make my own cheaper than they sell grams. I can buy way better for way cheaper than I can make. That's why i havent touched my setup in almost 2 years.

Rusty419Shackleford

What the fuck? Not in the freezer!

FroggyNight

Uh, ya bud freezer is fine depending on what you’re doing with it. If you’re doing something like bubble hash you want it frozen anyways.

Ill_Hamster_8935

FYI check your freezer temperatures cause a few degrees makes a difference

Rusty419Shackleford

Yea, if you want fresh frozen to process further. Ya don't wanna put your dried and cured nugs in there though if you wanna smoke em

420dabs420

So is 5 ounces too little???

EntheogenExplorer

Right there with you. I’m sitting on 12oz with another 8 or so drying, all for personal use. Time to make some hash rosin.

Keife

You just need more friends. I volunteer as tribute. ROFL. Does it change the bud in any noticeable way?

EntheogenExplorer

Haha yeah man don’t relocate half way across the country right before a pandemic. Haven’t seen a friend in years 🤣 Right now I have two harvests of THC bomb auto side by side. 1 harvest was cured 6 months then vacuum sealed for 4. The other harvest was cured for 4 months. The 10 month old stuff blows away the 4 month old stuff in terms of depth of smell and flavor. No major difference in effects. It doesn’t look as nice - it’s more of a beige than a green. But it really aged nicely. I was planning to process the older stuff into hash rosin and start using the newer stuff, but I decided to keep using the older stuff and continue curing the new stuff.

g1g14

Lol! This was for my outdoor grows. I pulled 13oz from one plant and 11 on another. Bit I get to smoke all year and dabble in autos for hybrids. Full year hobby

Alert-War-7276

Give? Shit better pay not full but something 5 a g on everything

FroggyNight

Nah, free. Usually 1/8-1/4 per grow. These friends I’ve known my entire life so they’re practically brothers.

Alert-War-7276

Overstood 👍

DeadicatedBRONX

Are you adopting any family? Lol Just kidding! God Bless you, you have a caring heart. I'm here in NYC and I hope when we can legally grow that I can also grow mmj for someone who isn't able to afford it; first I have to figure out how I can grow for my own medically use, I need about an ounce a week for my chronic pain and other ailments that mmj helps. At 6 plants per person, I know LST is my friend.

Rosmarino-fresco

Yeah I agree, I would definitely make pay my friends something like 4 o 5 a g, but it would be free until I become pretty good on growing this plants, right now I'm pretty noob

Thehorrorofraw

Sound like you need a bigger garden, lol

cordobeculiaw

I left forgotten, for a year, 20g that were vacuum sealed. They retained flavor, potency and moisture as if they had been packaged yesterday.

CastingNed

there's no way to prevent loss of potency THC degrades by 30% a year in even the best cure conditions

Ragin_koala

What about vacuum sealed and low temp?

cordobeculiaw

I do not agree. The vacuum sealed THC, at room temperature (20 °) remains relatively stable for one year. [Source](https://sci-hub.ee/10.1016/j.forsciint.2019.05.035)

CastingNed

Thank you for this but this is an extremely flawed study because the study is reliant on police seized cannabis / hash the study has no data on the actual THC % immediately after cure when levels are at the highest... and eventually plateu out

cordobeculiaw

It seems fair to me. Expose your sources

Ireallydontknowbuddy

I prefer jars. The plastic rips off the trichomes

bubbatate21

Canning jars are meant to be filled then boiled to seal them ...thats why there’s a little rubber in the lid

DirteeCanuck

They make Can Sealers that use reverse pressure. Foodsaver has one that attaches to their units. [https://www.foodsaver.ca/en\_CA/accessories/foodsaver-jar-sealer-regular/T03-0006-02P.html](https://www.foodsaver.ca/en_CA/accessories/foodsaver-jar-sealer-regular/T03-0006-02P.html) Jars are the way to go. Store them in a dark cool spot.

sumguyonhere

Do u have to burp them?

Seeksbiggbiggfan

Only if the bud is not dried and cured fully. You want to get that done and out of the way before you start thinking long term.

sumguyonhere

When u do long term storage doesnt the curing process still continue? Its like storing cigars and wine right?

Seeksbiggbiggfan

Sure! Yes, it’s mostly just getting everything to a consistent and stable humidity before sealing.

DirteeCanuck

It's when I primarily do my curing. I am smoking my harvest from feb and it's WAY better than even 3 months ago as the bud has lost all it's brightness and cured up perfectly. Since I jar my shit for so long I dry it fast and overdry it just a little. Takes 3-4 days and the bud is crunchy. When I do this it will leave a small amount of moisture in the stems which will add a bit once in the jars. I don't dry for 2 weeks like most people because I don't personally think that cures fuck all. I have a mesh drying rack I hang from the tent and just leave the exhaust at 80% and the fan @ it's lowest setting. The bud dries in days not weeks. The real curing happens in the jars over a long time. No need to dry it for weeks. I personally think it traps more terpenes this way also. I have GC that smells like Tangerines and when I crack a jar now it's fucking insanely good smell. When I cracked a jar after only a few weeks or a month it still smelled insane but the cured smell is truly next level. No loss in smell or taste whatsoever. I never ever have mold issues this way and never get nervous if my jars will develop mold as they always on the dryer side. Once I crack a jar and start taking buds out to smoke it will gain moisture just from the air and opening it. By the time I smoke the last bud in the jar it's already moister than I would prefer.

LeisurelySerious

I never did either till last harvest.

420dabs420

Honestly better if you need it later on

lil_stop

I freeze mine

g1g14

I vacuum seal in qt canning jars with humidity pk and rh meter once cured. Lasts me a year on a good harvest. Self consumption or parties.

EntheogenExplorer

I also vacuum seal in quart canning jars with a Boveda 62. I’m vaping some 9 month old THC Bomb Auto right now. It’s fantastic and even still presses into some quality rosin.

g1g14

Same here. I'm still going with fem. Unicorn Poop and Tropical Fuel from last years grow. Very smooth still. Aged nicely 👌

KidCancun007

U saying u put bud in canning jar then vac seal the jar in a vacuum seal bag? Or do u have special canning cars that can be vac sealed with a hose or something?

g1g14

An attachment for a food saver on Amazon. No bag bud in jar and suck the lid on. Beautiful thing

KidCancun007

Gotcha. I have seen those. Are those jars plastic tho? Any issues with plastic leaching?

g1g14

Not plastic Ball glass canning jars . I bought the wide mouth and narrow mouth attachments. Cheap. I believe it was like 25$ sometimes I can't find large mouth jars or I use smaller jam sizes for traveling or passing them out to friends. No smell for carrying.

WabigoonFishing

Longterm over vacuuming the buds will pull terps out. They are volatile substances increasing the pressure (edit - I mean vacuum) is the same as increasing the heat some of the most volatile ones will vaporize.

RealJeil420

An alternative would be to use dry nitrogen in a jar to displace the oxygen and other stuff. You can also buy those things that absorb oxygen from pantry items. You usually need an account with a gas supplier to get a bottle though, I think.

LaSerreduParadis

The problem with nitro packing is that when you do end up opening the jar/package the flower degrades a lot faster than if it was just packed regularly. So not a bad idea to do with small amounts, but five oz would probably go to shit pretty fast if it's just for moderate personal use.

RealJeil420

Why would nitrogen make it degrade quicker? 5 ozs would prob last me quite a while, nowadays. I used to use nitrogen to package chemicals that could react to moisture or oxygen.

CastingNed

THC naturally degrades no matter what you do... a wild guess but nitrogen could weaken the chemical bonds comprising the thc molecule so when exposed to the highly caustic air / different moisture levels they degrade at a much higher rate

Ragin_koala

Any proof to that claim? It doesn't seem from just a chemical structure viewpoint that unstable to degrade on its own regardless of conditions, light, heat and Oxygen could speed it up but a low temp, oxygen and light free environment should make it last for longer, [here's a 4 year study on the subject](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30901710/) instead of bro science

alimek

I wonder if argon gas would be suitable to displace the oxygen for long term storage. Same problem of needing a bottle and regulator, etc. But if you have a welder in your circle, they will probably have it. 🤷‍♂️

RealJeil420

Just googled and apparently they do make foodsafe nitrogen at 98% pure.

RealJeil420

True and I think argon is inert so I dont see how it would be an issue.

RealJeil420

Argon might be expensive. I would also check to make sure its pure or foodsafe or something. From what i heard butane can have benzenes in it so you wouldn't want something like that in it. I would check that before using nitrogen too.

alimek

Haha holy shit, good call

pelorizado83

Grove bags....

LeisurelySerious

It’s what came with the sealer

pelorizado83

Oh I know, I have one. Saying I use these bags instead.

Rndmdvlpr

I have a bag that isn’t vacuum sealed. Should it be? I’m about a week into cure.

pelorizado83

We don't vacuum anything. Just air tight is sufficient. We used glass jars before we started using grove bags.

LeisurelySerious

Sorry for the typo btw in the title

Wet_Valley

Thermos brand soup cups. They are airtight, UV blocking, stainless steel and insulated. I have trim in one for over a year, still green and terpy. Vacuum packing is a good option, but plastic will always steal some trichomes because of it's negative charge. Just a thought.

randomaccountname277

I would never anymore i use to this when i was younger Goodbye pretty much all of your trichome heads, a vaccum sealer will pop over 75% of the heads. Look under a scope at your buds before and after you scope it and you’ll never vac seal again unless shippin packs

Goddamnpassword

Throws me back to buying illicitly in 2007.

Elis_33

Good ol days.

kungfukenny3

glass is king

growthegrow

It's not even fully vacuumed though?

LeisurelySerious

I did it about 90% I don’t want to crush the buds to much

CaptainRhino2011

Grove bags

dunkindosenuts

Grove Bags seem like a nice idea but unsustainable and plastic.

trogloherb

I just bought some; so if I get dried enough, I can put them in there and itll bring down/keep at 62% w no burping?

WolvenHelm

Glass and only glass for anything that will stay there for more than a week. Everything else gets it even more stale, than it already would.

toddbaldwin420

That 29gs wouldn’t last a couple days or a week tops lol so no long term storing here, it all gets smoked.

nudismisawesome

Absolutely. I do quarters and freeze them. Same with my cannabutter/cookies.

pedro789CapeTown

Terp lock bags work amazingly. But so does keeping it in the fridge or freezer.

EdithDich

Nope, you're the only one.

danav

Those bags aren't really air tight tbh. It will still dry out, even with a Boveda pack. Go find some knock-off Infinity Jars.

Jackie_Daytona-Human

i love how you put the "s" on the end of the weight. made me smile.

BudtendersStash

I did some research recently into packaging (for a food product). And, you need special laminated plastics to prevent air from penetrating (outer layer is strong and doesn't tear, middle layer stops air exchange, inner layer stops oils from penetrating). Saran Wrap is actually the very best at preventing air-exchange - by like 1 or 2 orders of magnitude - but they changed the formula decades ago, and today's Saran Wrap isn't actually made of saran anymore. Vacuum sealing bags were the worst. You wouldn't believe how much air they let pass through! It was way more than I'd ever have expected (it was something like 100ppm per day). I tested our food product in those, and they went stale in 2 months.

720tofreedom

I have but found it doesn't work great. I rather Mason jar or hash it. Seems the bags don't hold vac unless double sealed and it squishes my lovely bud more then I care for. That being said I do prep a bunch a once for sous vide to decarb for my edibles and do a whack of those at a time, usually they only stay vacked for a week to three ish.

MedicalMaryJane1917

So no joke just now I bought a vacuum sealer to test it out. I guess I didn’t expect it to seal so strongly, it packed down those poor little buds into the consistency of beef jerky haha. Will have to play around with it and see if I can pause/stop the vacuum and then seal.

DrugsArntGoingAnywhr

I used to but didn't like how solid it made the buds. I now use glass jars with appropriate number of boveda 62% packs.

shotsallfukds

I do that with a gram of each strain I grow. I use edibles only so I go through alot of cannabis

Quick-Instruction446

Place in cool, dark and dry place vacuum sealed packs should last you a year or until you smoke em all whichever comes first

prawndavid

Mason jars into the freezer after 2 weeks of burps. I tend to go a little drier than needed but use a huge sized bovida after I take one out and it always seems to smoke well. Much less of that "stale " taste then when I just used to leave them in a cool dark place.

87_Silverado

Large bovedas in large jars. Long term cure requires atmosphere and in my opinion is better than freeze dried or vac sealed.

Thehorrorofraw

Light and oxygen are your enemy. Do your best to keep the temp consistent and it’ll last till next season

GettingCrappedOn

The 'squeeze' on the buds, is not good. You will lose potency. As well as not being able to control humidity levels. Seal it to high, mold, To low, dust
